Absolutely, we used to comment on it all time in the early 80's when it seemed that Jerry's overall health and appearance took a dive.
I don't know where the word came from but we would talk about Jerry being on the "schmeeze". My buddy used to say that (during space in the early to mid 80's) when Jerry would slip into those really quick muffled runs that he was imitating the sound of his water pipe. I also seem to remember that sometime in the early 80's there was a rumour that the Band had had a meeting and threatened to end the band if Jerry did not do something about his drug addiction.

Then I guess you knew someone who knew someone who knew someone who knew someone, cuz as I recall from Phil's book (or another one or several), that did happen around '84ish.

I didn't. Does that count? What the other tens of thousands of people who saw the band then thought or knew, I have no clue ........

I think I was momentarily shocked, since I'd always thought of heroin as beyond the pale, but it wasn't a big surprise that Jerry/band members might do things that would seem pretty disillusioning if they saw the light of day. I certainly assumed they really weren't idealized hippies tripping through the flowers day in and out.

Whatever the case, his somewhat overindulgent interest in food was readily apparent.

No kidding. It was glaringly obvious at the time that he was not exactly leading a healthy lifestyle. But what really strikes me now is when I go back and see pics from when I first saw the band in '78, when Jerry still looked like (and was perceived as) basically the coolest hippie ever, and '85, by which time he had morphed into Grandpa Cookie Monster on Life Support.

A speeded-up time motion thing from those years would be astounding. Koyaanisqatsi: Jerry's Life Out of Balance.

Fantastic post. From the Koyaanisqatsi reference to the pic of Jerry clutching the GD equivalent of the nuclear "football." Three cheers!

Thanks. It's the early influence of that Cleveland water. It inspires a person to great heights of nerdish time wasting :-)

One thing that really struck me is the differences in relative size between Jerry's girth and the size of his guitars. Unless Wolf (?) and Tiger (?) were all that different in size, that is one big change. By '85, he seems to be carrying a Toys R Us guitar. Perhaps in solidarity with Brent.

Saw the JGB in Middletown NY in '84, Jerry looked like a hockey goalie up there on stage.

When he sang the "anyone who sweats like that must be alright" we thought he was gonna drop.

I had herd some rumors about Jerry having a briefcase full or chemical entertainment , but I think we assumed anyone who survived the 60's had dogged some of the biggest bullets, and maybe toned down their intake . So it was a surprise it was heroin . By that period, with Deadheads, it was pot, or psychedelics, the other drugs were somewhat looked down upon . Coke was the devil's drug . We had no idea how much of these "other drugs" (inc. booze) were being consumed by the band .
I guess, I was just naive, and some of you were more aware,or were closer to the stage, or backstage !
